USAA has excellent communication. One thing I learned about their online correspondence is when I use their online texting, an agent would respond with a generic answer like "we will respond to you shortly." Then I wouldn't hear anything for a week or more. So I would send a text on their website to follow-up. The agent would respond right away with a brush-off response. I realized that I had to be the last one to send a message in order to get my claim responded to in a timely manner. If they said "thank you," I'd say "you're welcome." I'd send a text every day to follow-up. Phone voicemails were never answered.

I used to have State Farm for home insurance. State Farm kept sending me letters telling me what I needed to correct on my property or I would be canceled. I was without home insurance when I bought insurance with USAA. They covered me with no questions asked, and don't send me letters threatening to cancel my coverage. I did not shop around for insurance by premium I have had the same auto insurer for years now and they have always done right by me so I stuck with them when I purchased a home. I'm sure compared to other insurers there are some areas where I could get better coverage but I like knowing that my claim will be handled professionally like my previous claims

My insurer's customer service is great it is one of the reasons why I went with the insurance company that I use for my home. I have always had friendly knowledgeable people answer the phone and I have never had to deal with long wait times.

They were very quick and professional, but not very friendly and definitely when I finally made a small claim after many years they wanted to settle as fast as possible before all the damage could be discovered. I don't trust them.

I think a lot of insurance companies are now requiring that you overinsure your home, and especially a very old home I have discovered is very expensive to insure. In the past, the homes I bought were much newer. That makes a difference. Thankfully, I see some new more progressive insurance companies coming into the arena and I hope to switch soon.

Average coverage with high deductible at a high rate, mainly due to the home is a century home, but everything is updated top of the line - wiring, roof, furnace, reconstructed walls, copper plumbing, in better shape than most new homes, and this was verified when they sent their own inspector out to the home when I first got the insurance and he was surprised and commented on this as well. After paying for 7 years, we had a tornado which damaged the side of the house, trees, the shed, and roof. They paid out after deductible a total of about $2000. Claimed the shingles were still on, but they were crumbling. I had to pay to put a whole new roof on. And what did they do? Raise my rates. Now I have to wait 2-3 years to go elsewhere because it shows I made a claim, which was a very small payout. They did not reward me for improving my house and paying for a new roof which they should have had to pay for. First time I ever made a claim.

My premium has always been average to high for my age of home I believe, but with my history of paying on time for many years, and even when I made one claim they had to pay very little which I was penalized for instead of being rewarded as a long-term loyal customer. My rates went up over $300 per year even after I paid to replace my roof $9000, and didn't come after them for that.

The policy will cover 100,000 to dwelling and 75,000 to personal belongings. Also, it covers ice, snow damage as well as storm damage. It does not cover flood.
