According to a Gavop study, homeowners in Mobile, Alabama, pay an average homeowner's insurance rate of $630 per annum. On average, about 340 robberies and 10,643, property-related crimes are reported annually in Mobile. In fact, the city has one of the highest crime rates in the United States among communities of all sizes—from the smallest towns to the largest cities. A Mobile homeowner’s property has a one in sixteen chance of being a target of crime.

According to the year-end crime statistics in 2018, 39 murders were reported in Mobile. About 95% of the Alabama neighborhoods have a lower crime rate than that in Mobile.

Violent crime statistics significantly vary by neighborhood: economically developed areas and those with higher education levels tend to have lower crime rates. College Park, Di Grado, and Hannon Park have been identified as the safest neighborhoods in Mobile. College Park has a median home value of $284,167 while Di Gardo and Hannon Park have median home values of $238,100 and $176,050 respectively.

In contrast, Plateau has one of the highest crime rates and is considered one of the most unsafe neighborhoods in Mobile. Plateau has a median home value of $53,450 and a replacement value of $50,000.

Mobile city is the neighborhood with the highest education rate; more than 28% of its residents have at least a bachelor’s degree. The neighborhood of Owens has the lowest average home value at $43,600. Airmont, on the other hand, reports the highest home value and replacement cost of $483,100 and $434,790, respectively.

Based on  detailed profiling of Mobile neighborhoods, Gavop strategists suggest that Mobile homeowners can lower their insurance costs by enhancing the safety features of their properties. Better safety features help lower home insurance rates, as such homes are safe bets for insurance firms. For instance, installing deadbolt locks can earn Mobile homeowners a discount of $181 on their homeowner's insurance. Homes with burglar alarms (e.g., smart alarm sensor, indoor and outdoor cameras, smart locks, and sky control panel) are eligible for an additional discount of $86. Fire extinguishers can earn Mobile homeowners a discount of about $114.
